Children with attention deficit disorder should be carefully screened for obstructive sleep apnea as new studies estimate at least 25% of children with ADD/ADHD have been found to actually have obstructive sleep apnea. This is often related to enlarged tonsils causing the obstruction in the airway. Most symptoms of sleep apnea in children are related to the sleep deprivation that comes with this condition, and are indistinguishable from those of ADD/ADHD.
Early dementia and impaired cognitive status can significantly improve if OSA co-exists and is treated.
